Beware! West Kelowna RCMP Warns of Sophisticated Police Impersonation Scam (2026)

Bold headline: Scammers are fooling people with highly convincing RCMP impersonations—and they’re dialing up the deception with caller ID spoofing. But here’s the twist you need to know: it isn’t the RCMP calling you at all.

West Kelowna RCMP are warning residents after two overnight reports of an elaborate scam in which impersonators pose as Mounties and spoof caller IDs to make the calls appear to come from the West Kelowna RCMP. Victims were invited to join a video call, where the callers wore police-style uniforms. During these chats, the scammers tried to obtain personal and financial details that could later be used for extortion.

“This scam is very elaborate and convincing,” said Const. Ash Puri. “We want to stress that the RCMP will never ask for money, personal banking information, or private identification details over the phone or through video chat.”

What the RCMP want the public to know is simple:
- The RCMP will never demand payment over the phone.
- They will never request banking information, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or money transfers.
- Official business will not be conducted via Zoom, FaceTime, or other video-chat platforms.
- They will not demand money to avoid arrest or legal consequences.

If you receive a suspicious call:
- Hang up immediately.
- Do not share personal or financial information.
- Look up your local detachment’s number independently, rather than using the number shown on the call.
- Contact your local police to verify.

In response to the incidents, the West Kelowna RCMP have opened a centralized file to investigate and locate the perpetrators. The two reporting individuals were advised to contact their local police agencies in their own jurisdictions.

Thought-provoking takeaway: With scammers growing more sophisticated, how should communities balance skepticism with caution—and what steps can individuals take to verify identity without brushing off legitimate outreach? Would you challenge the idea that “the RCMP would never contact you this way” in every modern scenario, or do you prefer to err on the side of caution? Share your thoughts in the comments.
