A trial has been postponed as Rihaal Kumar receives ongoing treatment
Rihaal Kumar, an 18-year-old high school student, now has his murder trial delayed after the court vacated the date that had been set to commence today and run through March 6.
In the initial psychiatric assessment, Kumar was deemed fit to stand trial. However, High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar reported that Dr. Shital Singh from Saint Giles Hospital told the court the report was not yet ready, as Kumar continues with medical treatment.
Judge Goundar noted that brain scan results revealed some abnormalities, prompting a request for an additional month to continue treatment and to submit a further report.
Defence attorney Robert Bancod stated that his team has met with Kumar but is unaware of the specifics of the treatment being provided.
State counsel Bhavna Kantharia indicated she had no objection to delaying the trial dates.
Justice Goundar added that once the updated report is prepared, he will review it and set a new trial date.
Kumar faces one count of murder for allegedly killing Sharuf Shaakir Khan at a Suva apartment complex in July of the previous year.
The case has been adjourned to the 16th of next month.
