The Chelsea Flower Show, a renowned event in the gardening world, is facing a significant change as it seeks new charity sponsors to replace the mysterious donors who have ended their support. This prestigious show, held annually at the Royal Hospital gardens in London, has been a platform for showcasing extraordinary gardens and charitable causes since its inception. However, the departure of Project Giving Back, a philanthropic couple who have spent over £23 million on show gardens, has left a void that needs to be filled.
Project Giving Back, established in 2022 by anonymous donors, has been instrumental in funding 63 gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show, supporting various charities. This year marks the end of their funding, and the show is bidding farewell with a special garden designed to celebrate their work. Historically, corporate sponsors have spent substantial amounts, up to £1 million, on creating gardens, but the number of sponsors has declined post-2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite this, 63 charities have stepped in to fill the gap, thanks to Project Giving Back's grants. This year's featured charities include Asthma & Lung UK, the Children's Society, the Eden Project, and Parkinson's UK. The show has also embraced eco-friendly gardening, with a focus on bee- and butterfly-friendly flowers and native plant growth, largely driven by Project Giving Back's rewilding garden, which won the best in show award in 2022.
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), which runs the Chelsea Flower Show, has traditionally relied on sponsors like M&G, who were the headline sponsor for 11 years until 2020. This year, Range Rover takes over the lead sponsorship from The Newt, a Somerset hotel. However, to fill the gap left by Project Giving Back, the RHS is actively seeking new charitable funding for 2027.
Hattie Ghaui, CEO of Project Giving Back, expressed that this is their final year of funding gardens for good causes through applications for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The charity will be wound down after the show but aims to share its experiences and create an inspiring blueprint for other sponsors. The charity's final garden, designed by James Basson, will feature towering red sandstone cliffs and pine woodland, showcasing the potential future of summer gardens in the UK as climate breakdown takes hold.
