Durban University of Technology's International Student Orientation: A Comprehensive Support System
The Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently hosted a special orientation program for international students from partner universities, offering a warm welcome and comprehensive support to ensure their smooth transition into the academic environment. This event, held on February 3rd, coincided with the orientation of DUT's first-year students, but with a tailored focus on international needs.
The program attracted participants from diverse countries, including Germany, France, and China, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences. The orientation sessions were designed to introduce students to a wide range of resources available at DUT, aiming to facilitate their adjustment to the new academic setting.
Dr. Lavern Samuels, Director of International Education and Partnerships, emphasized the university's commitment to providing equal support to all students, regardless of their background. He highlighted the challenges even local students face in navigating the campus and assured international students of the university's assistance in finding their way around.
Dr. Samuels explained, "We provide clear directions and ongoing support to help students locate the campus. For those arriving by air or road, we offer various transportation options. In cases where students get lost, Carol Newman from my office provides individual assistance."
One of the international students, Wahab Kayondo from Germany, shared his experience with the exchange program between his university and DUT. He mentioned that last year, they welcomed students from Durban for a university-based pathfinder program, and later, DUT sent students to Germany. Kayondo expressed the initial challenge of navigating the large campus, but praised the support he received, including the helpful admin staff and the cooperative environment.
Nisa Akyol, another excited participant, expressed her enthusiasm for the program, as it was her first time abroad. She looked forward to experiencing the hot weather, meeting new people, and discovering the study environment at DUT.
The orientation for South African students followed a similar structure, introducing participants to campus facilities and support programs. Professor Thandwa Zizwe Mthembu, Vice-Chancellor of DUT, welcomed the students and encouraged them to embrace new experiences, make friends, and engage with diverse individuals. He emphasized the importance of values and respect in their interactions, fostering personal growth and a sense of global citizenship.
In conclusion, DUT's international student orientation program demonstrates a commitment to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for students from around the world, ensuring they feel welcomed and prepared for their academic journey.
