On February 16th, the cycling world will witness the four-year-old race, which has already seen some incredible moments. Tadej Pogacar, the winner in 2023, brought the race into the spotlight, but this year, the organizers have their eyes on an even bigger prize: Mathieu van der Poel, the cyclocross World Champion.
The race, with its unique gravel sectors, has become a popular early-season challenge. It offers a diverse experience, serving as a serious goal for some riders and an intense preparation for others ahead of Strade Bianche. Despite its young age, the race has attracted top talent, with Alexey Lutsenko and Oier Lazkano claiming victories in previous editions. Even a former World Champion, Michal Kwiatkowski, found success here, showcasing the race's appeal.
But here's where it gets controversial... Tadej Pogacar, the star of the show in 2023, is unlikely to return anytime soon. Race director Pascual Momparler revealed that Pogacar's desire to spend more time at home and race less this year means he might not be seen at the race for a while. However, Momparler has a plan B, and it's a big one.
"Mathieu van der Poel is the big goal," Momparler stated. The Dutchman, a former gravel World Champion and a cycling icon, is the ultimate prize the race organizers are aiming for. With his success and influence, van der Poel's presence would be a game-changer.
Momparler understands the challenge. Top riders are now incredibly selective, carefully choosing their races to achieve peak performance. Pogacar, for instance, focuses on the spring classics, while Jonas Vingegaard targets the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France. This selective approach means the race organizers must work harder to attract the best talent.
So, how does Momparler plan to convince van der Poel? He's keeping his cards close to his chest for now, but he's confident in his ability to negotiate. "I haven't approached Van der Poel yet, but I have good contacts and I know how to negotiate with him," he said. Momparler aims to make an interesting and convincing offer, just like he did with Tom Pidcock this year.
Will Mathieu van der Poel grace the Clásica Jaén Paraiso Interior with his presence? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: the race organizers are leaving no stone unturned to make it happen.
