And here's where it gets controversial... Mr. Duddy had to take a leap of faith with this purchase. Due to the bull's high value, insurance companies were hesitant to cover him for the full amount. "They capped the insurance at $150,000, so I had to accept that risk," he said.
But the potential rewards are huge. Mr. Duddy has already received interest from breeding companies, both locally and overseas, who want a piece of this bull's genetics. Bull semen is a lucrative business, with farmers willing to pay top dollar for access to quality genetics.
And this is the part most people miss... the impact of this record-breaking sale goes beyond just one bull. It's a confidence boost for South Australian breeders. Laryn Gogel, the state livestock sales manager at Elders, who helped sell Velocity, said, "It's fantastic to see South Australia getting the attention it deserves. We've been a bit overlooked in the past, but this record-breaker is a great sign for our state's Angus industry."
The bull's owner, Scott Finlay, is also thrilled with the interest his bull has generated. "He was an exceptional animal, and I'm glad his genetics are now being utilized to improve herds across the country."
