Sicily's Cefalù came in 15th, with four other Italian destinations rounding out the top 20: Sardinia's Bosa, Ravello on the Amalfi Coast, Procida Island off the coast of Naples, and Taormina, the setting of the second season of The White Lotus.
Other countries strongly represented on the list include Spain (Almería and Begur), Portugal (Câmara de Lobos, Lisbon, and Costa Vicentina), and Greece (Ano Koufonissi and Avlemonas). Other destinations in the ranking include Paris, Alaçatı in Turkey, and Stavanger in Norway.
The Štajerska Region in Slovenia took third place. Last year, Maribor, the largest city in the region, was named the Best Wine Capital by European Best Destinations, while Ptuj was awarded the title of Best Cultural Heritage Town in Europe.
How the European Best Destinations Ranking is Decided
European Best Destinations monitors nearly 500 cities, towns, and regions to decide which places deserve the title each year. They analyze data such as international arrivals, overnight stays, growth rates, search demand on major search engines, international media visibility, and growth on social media platforms. From this, they create a longlist of 42 destinations showing the "strongest momentum" for the upcoming year, which are then voted on by travelers.
Voters, who come from the platform's database and have a strong interest in traveling to Europe, are asked, "Which destination would you most like to visit in Europe in 2026?" They can cast up to three votes and are provided with an overview and images of each destination. Notably, voters cannot choose a destination in their own country.
Overall, 1.3 million votes were cast, although European Best Destinations has not revealed the exact number of participants.
